WEEKS PAINTING ACQUIRED BY VMFA
511 GALLERY is pleased to announce that The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has recently acquired an Edwin Lord Weeks painting from our Back Room. This painting, The Hour of Prayer at Moti Masjid (The Pearl Mosque, Agra) dates from about 1888 to 1889, and is 10 feet wide by 7 feet tall.
Since our inception, it has been the goal of 511 Gallery to place many important works of art into the permanent collections of public institutions in the United States, where they can be seen and studied by both generations of museum-goers and scholars. This acquisition by The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is exactly the outcome the gallery has worked so diligently to effect; and we are delighted that Dr. Sylvia Yount, Virginia's Cochrane Curator of American Art, recognized the strength of this painting and that the work would further enhance the museum's already strong American Art collection.
