JENNIFER ODEM RECEIVES EXHIBITION AT THE NEW ORLEANS MUSEUM OF ART
511 Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition at the New Orleans Museum of Art, (March 4 - May 24), Discourse in Abstraction: Jennifer Odem Encounters NOMA's Permanent Collection. The exhibition places Odem's sculptures in an imagined dialogue with major artworks from the museum's permanent collection -- paintings and one sculpture by such artists as Judy Chicago, James Rosenquist, Pat Steir and Yves Klein.
A native of Louisiana, Jennifer Odem's sculptures and drawings have been widely exhibited in the U.S. and in Europe. Exploring issues of gender differentiation, environmental life, and artmaking itself, Odem chooses materials that speak to an ambivalence about questions of weight and permanence, referencing them to masculine and feminine signifiers. The sculptures challenge these signifiers through the artist’s selection of forms, structural compositions, colors, and materials.
Discourse in Abstraction is organized by Miranda Lash, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at New Orleans Museum of Art.
